Greetings to Metro Baltimore Chapter Members.

I hope you all have survived the hot summer! We are starting off this fall with a Chapter Meeting next week, Tuesday Sept 14^th, at St Agnes Hospital. The meeting will be from 5 pm-7pm. Directions to the room will be available at the main entrance to the hospital. Our education topic is: Hospital Acquired Infections: the impact on patients and families. I hope many of you can make it.

We will also be having a discussion about officers for the upcoming year and planning for 2011. If there is anyone interested in running for office that has not already contacted me please do so prior to Sept. 14^th.

Greetings from the MBC President!

Our year is off to an energetic start for Md ENA. There are conferences and classes being offered that we hope you will all take advantage of:

ENA by the Bay will feature Gail Lenehan our Secretary/Treasurer from National ENA as well as several excellent speakers on a variety of topics. There should be something for everyone and we hope to see you there on May 7^th.

Save the Date: MBC ENA is presenting a half day conference on Thursday June 10^th, “ Minding your P’s and Q’s: Practice, Pitfalls, Quality and Questions “, with Edie Bours RN, Esq and Kristen Seidl as our guest speakers. The registration brochure should be available shortly.

Please look at the education offerings online to check on ENPC, TNCC, and CATN classes that are available as new courses have been added.

Our next meeting will be at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on April 28^th from 5pm-7pm. We hope to see you there. William Swain Jr, RN - I am a registered nurse who works in the emergency department at Franklin Square Hospital. I also work part time on the behavioral health unit at Laurel Regional hospital. I was born and raised in Brooklyn New York where my parents and siblings continue to reside. After high school I joined the United States Marine Corps where I served for 22 years. While in the Marines I had the opportunity to travel to many places and see lots of things. While stationed in Pennsylvania, I worked with a Navy Corpsman who noticed my interest in the medical field. He asked if I would be interested in going to nursing school. At the time I didn't think I would be interested but a few years later, I took my first class and the rest is history. I graduated from Marymount University in 1999 and have been an emergency room nurse for the past 5 years.

MetroBaltimore ENA Update

It is hard to believe it is already November! I hope everyone had a chance to participate in some of the events with the ENA Annual Conference here in Baltimore last month. The conference was a huge success - they had so many onsite registrations that they used all of their conference bags and supplies. Because of the great turnout, I heard Baltimore may be the host city again in several years! Thank you to everyone who attended the conference, volunteered as an ambassador or at the state booth, participated in tours of their facility, and generally provided a warm welcome to all of the emergency nurses.

We purchased a copy of the audio recordings of the conference to share with MetroBaltimore ENA members. If you or your facility would like to borrow it, please let me know and we can make arrangements to get it to you. MetroBaltimore Chapter ENA update

Hello,

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. It is hard to believe that is already September. We have been busy planning for the National Conference to be held here in Baltimore October 7-10th. The registration for this conference is said to be higher than previous years, so it will be great to be the host city to all of our emergency nursing colleagues.

We will be having a chapter meeting this Monday, September 14, 2009 from 6-8pm at Franklin Square Hospital Center. Enter through the main entrance and the meeting will be in Room A on the 1st Floor (free parking across the street). We will begin the meeting with pizza and soda, along with the opportunity to speak with the Acetadote representative and/or network with the group. We will have a speaker at 6:30, followed by a short business meeting.

We are still looking for members to run for our chapter offices for the 2010 year. The MBC chapter, as of today, has 497 members!! This is nearly half of the entire state membership!! It is a great opportunity to get involved at the local level. Experience is not necessary - we are willing to mentor and all learn from each other.

The October MBC meeting will not be held due to all the activities associated with the National conference, but we are in the planning phases of the November meeting. Elections will be finalized, so this meeting will be an opportunity to meet and greet the new officers as well as celebrate the accomplishments of 2009. If you have any ideas, please let me know. The final plans will be posted on the MBC blog at http://mdenametrobaltimore.blogspot.com/, or stop by the Maryland booth during the conference for a flyer. The tentative date for the meeting/celebration is Sunday, November 8 - stay tuned!

We will be having our June meeting at Johns Hopkins Bayview on Monday June 8 from 6-8pm.
The educational topic will be transgenerational issues and challenges in the workplace.The meeting will be held in the Pavilion Conference room which is located on the 01 level of the Pavilion. Park in the campus parking garage located across from the blue awning entrance. We will provide parking passes for you. Enter the hospital through the blue awning, stop at the security desk to obtain a visitor pass. Ask the security officer to direct you to the Pavilion Conference Room. Refreshments will be provided.

A short business meeting will follow the educational session.

The presenter I had lined up, Al Struck, is unable to present at the meeting tonight. Instead, I will be presenting a review of the differential diagnosis and treatment of asthma vs. COPD, including a review of the NHLBI guidelines for asthma treatment.
Since you'll have to listen to me drone on, I figured I should arrange a meal. Thanks to Eric Roberts from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for providing dinner for our meeting. See you all at 6 pm in Parker Conference Room 1!

MetroBaltimore ENA April 2009 update

Hi everyone,

The next MetroBaltimore ENA meeting will Monday April 6 starting at 6pm in the Parker Conference Center Room 1 at Good Samaritan Hospital. The topic for our meeting will be differential diagnosis and prioritization in triage, presented by Albert Struck, PA-C. Mr. Struck is the chief PA in the Emergency Department at Good Samaritan Hospital, specializing in fast-track patients. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided (even if Paul Hess has to bring them himself!). Thanks Paul!

Bring a friend -you don't have to be a member to attend.

There will be a brief business meeting following the presentation - attendance is optional.

We began our celebration one week before Emergency Nurses Week with what we called “Spirit Week,” where we had team-building exercises and sporting events. One day during Emergency Nurses Week we brought in catered food for both day and night shift nurses. I really believe that they (staff) are the best of the best.

Revised CEN Content Outline is now Active!

The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) completes a full role delineation study (RDS) approximately every 4 years for the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) examination.

As of July 1, 2007 the content outline changes were applied to the CEN Exam and as of July 15, 2007 the changes were applied to the CEN-RO by Internet Based Test (IBT).

Pin Design Contest

Maryland Emergency Nurses Association Pin Design Contest

Attention all Maryland ENA members! It’s time to unleash your creative talents for the Maryland ENA Pin Design Contest. The winning design will be used for the State pin and other MD ENA products. All participants submitting entries must follow the guidelines listed below. Please read carefully:

· All designs must be received by Friday, August 31, 2007. Late entries will not be accepted.
· Designs should be approximately 3” x 5”. Include a reduced, thumbnail-size copy of design to simulate the approximate pin size (shapes may vary, approx. 1"x1"). Entries not complying with these standards and dimensions will be disqualified.
· Entries may be submitted on paper or electronically
· Designs must be submitted in two formats - (1) color and (2) black and white.
· Participants may submit more than one entry.
· Designs may incorporate the national ENA logo
· All submitted designs are the property of Maryland Emergency Nurses Association - this includes reproduction and modification rights. Designs will not be returned.
· Entries will be posted on the website in October for vote by Maryland ENA members
· Prize – a shirt and pin with your design and bragging rights!
